Dog lying on a sofa gazing out of the window on a sunny day

The neighborhood watch has four legs and no days off

Funny Videos & Pics

The window is the most important room in the house, if you ask a dog. It has weather and moving parts, plus a live feed of everything the neighborhood is getting wrong.

Some dogs treat a window like television. Some treat it like a job with a badge. The five dogs below have settled that question for themselves, and none of them are asking for a second opinion.

Dog lying on a sofa gazing out of the window on a sunny day
Shift one starts at 6 a.m. and nobody has clocked out yet. This one has claimed the sofa arm as an observation post, where she can see the driveway, the recycling bin, and the neighbor who once left a bag out for two days. The posture says a report is being drafted.

Nobody mentions the pay when you sign up. It is terrible, and the pension is a nap in a sunbeam at 2 p.m. that the whole department fights over.

Fluffy dog peering out through a glass window with curtains
Curtains are not an obstacle. They are a suggestion. There is a leaf moving out there, and somebody in this house needs to know about it before the mail carrier does.
Beagle gazing out of a window with a serious expression
Beagle attention is a rare and temporary resource. This one has spent the whole supply on a squirrel that has not moved in eleven minutes. A pair of beagles on an investigation is a different assignment, with the same intensity.

What gets flagged varies by dog. Delivery vans earn the full alarm. So does a plastic bag rolling down the street, and so does a cat crossing the property line, which also triggers pacing and a follow-up memo sent to the entire block.

Small fluffy dog in an orange sweater looking out of a blue window frame
Some dogs dress for the role. The sweater is orange, the frame is blue, and the effect is a small security professional who has done this before and knows where the camera is.
Fluffy white dog peering out of an old wooden window
A window is also a place to wait. This one watches the street the way you watch a kettle: patiently, and with a strong sense that nothing is happening fast enough.

Some of these dogs can also fall asleep in any position on earth, which suggests a flexible employment model. The same dog that stares down a delivery van will look away the second you find a chewed slipper, and that look on its face is reading you, not confessing.

Your dog has a window. Your dog has a schedule. The neighborhood is being watched closely by someone who works for kibble and will not be taking the weekend off.
