My dog’s personal list of threats includes the vacuum and one specific shopping bag that has never done anything to anyone. He is a serious watchdog with a narrow definition of crime.
That is the energy in this Maymo video. Indie and Potpie, two beagles with strong opinions, are halfway through a card game when the radio changes the station on its own. Then something knocks it off the table. Indie goes to the window, finds nothing out there, and comes back the way dogs do, pretending she was never worried at all.
Then the barking starts. It drifts up from the basement, so Indie opens the door, because somebody has to. What waits down there is a cartoon dog, flat and black and white, with very long arms and a real commitment to the bit. Indie ducks. Then the two of them meet face to face, and her reaction is the reason to watch the whole thing.
Every dog I have lived with runs this same protocol. Slow approach. One bark to test the situation. A quick retreat if the situation barks back. The only difference here is that the thing in the basement was drawn by a person.
Video by Maymo. Indie, Potpie, and the growing collection of props are theirs, not mine.
If your dog has a similar relationship with the unexplained, the research on that guilty look is a good follow-up. The face is about reading you, not confessing. And if your dog would have slept through the entire basement situation, you already know the dogs who can fall asleep absolutely anywhere.
