A home security camera in Connecticut caught something most of us hope we never see: a black bear sprinting across a driveway, straight toward a kid. What happened next is why dog people keep replaying the clip.
The family’s husky launched itself between the bear and the boy, and the bear changed its mind. It turned and ran. The kid was fine, and so was the dog.

The honest version: a husky charging a bear is not a plan. Bears are faster and stronger than any dog, and they are wildly unpredictable. A dog that gets between a bear and a child can end up badly hurt. This family got the good ending, and the dog’s timing was remarkable. That still does not make it something you can count on.
Working dogs earn their bravery on purpose. A rookie K9 we wrote about found three lost children on his first day on the job, and he had trained for that moment. Your dog has instincts, not a strategy.
What this means for your dog: if you live where bears roam, the real work happens before any encounter. Store food, trash, and birdseed where a bear cannot reach it, because a bear with a reason to come back will come back. Keep your dog leashed at dawn and dusk, and make some noise on the trail so you never surprise anything in the brush. If a bear does appear, get your dog inside and under control first. A dog that barks and lunges at a bear can turn a curious one defensive.
