A four-legged visitor turned up at the Tampa Police Department’s District Two office on North 30th Street on September 30, apparently hoping to join the force. Officers checked their K-9 roster, which was already full, and decided to find the dog’s real family instead. A quick microchip scan pointed them to an owner who had reported him missing.
Body camera footage shows the reunion outside the office. “I was crying this morning,” his owner told the officer as her dog hopped out of the patrol car. “Thank you, sir.” Police posted the clip with a fitting line: he may not have gotten the job, but he definitely stole their hearts.

What this means for your dog
The story is funny, but the lesson is practical. This dog got home because his microchip was current. A chip only works when the registry has your up-to-date phone number and address, and it does nothing if you forget to update it after a move. If your details have changed since you adopted your dog, fix them today. It takes five minutes.

It is also a reminder that a dog who wanders off is not always a runaway. Gates get left open, harnesses slip, and a curious nose can cover a lot of ground. A collar with a current tag gives a stranger a fast way to reach you, no scanner needed. That kind of fast thinking is what helped a rookie K9 find three lost children on his first day, though that dog had a badge and this one was just looking for a snack.
