Some dogs accept a no and move on. Lily treats it as the opening offer in a negotiation she intends to win.
Lily is an Italian greyhound, which means she is roughly nine pounds of opinion on legs. In this clip from The Pet Collective, her person tells her no, and the answer is immediate and theatrical. If you have ever shared a house with a sighthound, you know the shape of it. The dignity gets wounded first, then the whole body folds to the floor, and you are left apologizing to something that weighs less than a bag of flour.
That is the part small dogs with big feelings get right. They do not sulk quietly and get over it. They make sure the room knows a ruling was handed down, and that the ruling was wrong.
I love this clip because it is so recognizable. Every dog owner has stood in a kitchen holding a piece of cheese, explaining the concept of boundaries to an animal who has decided boundaries are for other people.
My own dog runs a version of this whenever he thinks nobody is watching, though his specialty is a limp that only appears when he has an audience. Same energy, different costume.
Watch Lily work. The commitment is the funny part. Nobody commits to a bit like a dog who has just been told no.
