A steroid shot beside the eye gave a beagle his sight back

Ziggy started walking toward the bathroom door instead of the bedroom door. He was nine, a bluetick beagle, in a house he knew by heart.

His left eye was already gone, removed after severe glaucoma took the sight and left him in pain. The right eye was next. At the Virginia-Maryland veterinary teaching hospital, ophthalmologist Ian Herring found a partially detached retina. The pathology report named the cause: uveodermatologic syndrome, where the immune system attacks the eye and skin pigment. It turns up mostly in Arctic breeds. Ziggy is a beagle.

The usual treatment suppresses the whole immune system, which was risky here. X-rays had turned up inflamed vertebrae in his mid-back, an infection needing six months of antibiotics, and damping his immune response could have let it reach the spinal cord. So Herring injected a steroid, triamcinolone, into the tissue beside the eye and added topical steroids. The first injection held for about five months. When the retina detached in May he repeated it, and Ziggy could see again within a week to ten days.

Nobody calls it a cure. Herring says vets rarely beat this disease and the injections buy time. Ziggy is on cyclosporine now and his right eye was quiet at his last check.

What this means for your dog

Eye trouble rarely announces itself. Watch for a squint that persists, a red or cloudy eye, a third eyelid that stays up, or a dog who misjudges familiar furniture. Call the vet that day, not next month. Pale patches on the nose, lips or eyelids alongside sore eyes are worth mentioning by name. Specialists can do more than owners expect, whether it is rebuilding a skull after a horse kick or saving one last eye, so ask about the bill with the treatment plan.
