Fall does not ask permission. One morning the floor is cold, the walk gets shorter, and somebody in the house starts pulling soft things out of a closet. Dogs notice all of it. Most of them negotiate. These six skipped the negotiating and went straight to wearing the sweater.
1. The leaf pile belongs to her now
The first real leaf drop of the season landed in a park, and this dog claimed the whole pile before anybody else got a look at it. She is sitting in the middle of the mess in a red sweater, taking no questions. Fall showed up and she was already dressed for it.
2. His report on the temperature
Somebody put a green knit sweater on this Chihuahua and took him to the lake, where he delivered a full report on how cold it was. Loudly. He is small and dressed, and he still has more to say about it. The sweater does half the work and he takes care of the rest.
3. The indoor strategy
This Pomeranian found the warmest surface in the house and stayed on it for the rest of the afternoon. She matches the bed. The walk can wait.
4. Leaves, and the urge to chase them
Leaves move, and that is all it takes. This one spent the afternoon sprinting across a forest floor covered with them, mouth open and fully committed to the chase. Whoever raked that pile did the work for him.
5. Dressed, and drafting a complaint
Here is a puppy who got a striped sweater and a camera in the same minute. He is staring straight into the lens with the expression of a dog assembling a formal objection. Give him a week and he will be standing by the front door, waiting for the sweater.
6. Ready for the verdict
Full outfit, clipped to a leash, standing outdoors like the day is going to be graded on style. His human is off camera holding the other end, probably wondering how the walk turned into a fitting. The dog has no such questions.
Fall is a good season to be a dog. The leaves are free entertainment and the hot pavement stops burning their feet. If your dog has a thick coat, this is the stretch of year that justifies it.
