Dog longevity pill nears FDA approval. What it can and cannot do

Dog Health & Medicine, Dog News

A daily pill meant to slow aging in older dogs is closer to pharmacy shelves than any drug of its kind, and owners are already asking vets about it.

LOY-002, from San Francisco company Loyal, is a daily tablet for dogs 10 and older weighing at least 14 pounds. The FDA has accepted two of the three sections needed for conditional approval, effectiveness and target animal safety. Manufacturing review is the last one.

What the pill is doing

Loyal calls LOY-002 a caloric restriction mimetic. It aims to nudge an older dog’s metabolism toward a lean dog’s, mostly through insulin sensitivity, without putting a hungry senior on a diet. The idea traces to a Purina study of Labradors: dogs fed 25 percent less lived a median 1.8 years longer, 13.0 against 11.2.

Conditional approval is not proof

Conditional approval lets a drug be sold while the longer evidence is gathered. Renewals are annual, up to five. If the company cannot meet the full standard, the drug leaves the market. The 1,300-dog STAY trial is still running, so nobody can say how many healthy months it buys any one dog.

What vets are saying

Veterinarian Dr. Greenstein, who spoke with Yahoo Life, said clients are already asking, and her answer starts with expectation management. A frail dog with several conditions will probably benefit less than one in better health, and no pill replaces daily care.

What this means for your dog

Nothing changes this month. LOY-002 is not approved or on sale, and Loyal’s timeline points to 2027. What works now is dull: keep your dog lean, walk him daily, keep vaccines and parasite prevention current, and get senior bloodwork every year. Bloodwork is where aging shows up first. A longevity drug, when it arrives, will go to a dog already in decent shape.
