A cardboard covered crate beside a busy Ohio interstate could have ended badly. Instead it ended with a state trooper crouching down, freeing the puppy inside, and promising the frightened pup everything would be okay.
Trooper Kronander of the Ohio State Highway Patrol spotted the crate while checking a rest area in Medina County during a morning patrol. Inside was a puppy with no food, water, or shelter nearby, completely dependent on someone noticing. Video shared by the patrol shows Kronander coaxing the pup out, playing with it in the grass, and carrying it to his cruiser. The puppy went first to the Medina patrol post, then to the Medina County SPCA, which called the abandonment heartbreaking and unacceptable. iHeartDogs has the full rescue story and video.
Ohio law prohibits animal abandonment, and leaving a dog shut in a crate beside a highway puts it in serious danger: heat, traffic, predators, and no way to escape. Investigators have not said who left the puppy or how long it sat there. What matters is that someone stopped to look.
