Could your dog use a heated dog bed? What to check first

Dog Lifestyle, Dog News

The first cold snap is the giveaway. Your dog finds the sunny patch on the floor, curls up tighter, and starts eyeing your spot on the couch. Whole Dog Journal’s look at heated dog beds arrives right on cue. The beds help older dogs with arthritis, short-haired and small breeds, puppies who miss their littermates’ warmth, nursing mothers, and dogs recovering from surgery.

Heat does two useful things. It loosens stiff joints before a walk, and it gives an achy dog a reason to lie down and stay down. What it cannot do is treat the arthritis itself, so a warm bed belongs next to your vet’s plan rather than in place of it.

Here is what this means for your dog. A bed should feel gently warm to your hand, never hot, and the cord should sit where your dog cannot reach or chew it. Look for a low-voltage or chew-resistant cord, a washable cover, and a timer or automatic shut-off. Do not hand your dog a human heating pad. Those run hotter than a pet can safely lie on, and their cords are not built for a dog who mouths things. Dogs normally run about 101 to 102.5 degrees, so they need far less added heat than we do.

Supervise the first few sessions. In older dogs who cannot easily stand and move off a warm spot, check the skin on the belly and elbows daily. Skip heated beds for dogs who chew cords or cannot shift position alone. If your dog has an open wound or fresh injury, ask your vet whether heat is right at all, since warmth helps some problems and worsens others. If your old friend has started pacing at night, the signs of dementia in senior dogs are worth a read too.
