If your dog has tapeworms, killing the tapeworm is the easy part. The hard part is the fleas that delivered it. That was the message from Nathanael Oster, VMD, during a session on the flea tapeworm at the 2026 Fetch National Harbor veterinary conference.
The biology is worth knowing. A dog does not pick up this tapeworm, Dipylidium caninum, from dirt or from another dog’s poop. He gets it by swallowing an infected flea, usually while biting at an itch near his tail or back legs. A few weeks later, dried segments that look like grains of rice or sesame seeds turn up in his stool or stuck in the fur around his rear end. Treatment with praziquantel or epsiprantel clears the worms quickly. Skip flea prevention and the cycle simply starts over.
What this means for your dog
Monthly flea prevention is tapeworm medicine. If you find segments, treat the current infection and then stay consistent with flea control on every pet in the house, because one untreated cat or dog keeps the fleas circulating. Wash bedding in hot water and vacuum well, since most of a flea population lives off the animal rather than on it. Human infections happen too, though they also require swallowing an infected flea, which is why cases turn up most often in young children.
Cats get flea tapeworms roughly four times as often as dogs. Oster pointed to three likely reasons: cats receive fewer tapeworm treatments, they are kept on monthly flea prevention less consistently, and grooming lets them swallow fleas faster than dogs usually manage.
