CBD oils, chews, and calming blends sit near the register in almost every pet store, and the labels promise plenty. The research behind them is narrower than the shelves suggest.
The most cited study is a small 2018 randomized crossover trial of dogs with osteoarthritis. One specific CBD oil was linked to better owner-reported pain and activity scores. That is a real result, but it covers one formulation given to one group of dogs, so it does not turn every bottle on the shelf into a treatment.
A 2023 trial on separation and car travel found improvements in some stress measures after a single dose. A 2025 blinded crossover study of 54 dogs found a blend of CBD, L-tryptophan, and alpha-casozepine lowered the cortisol rise during a short car ride compared with a placebo, while the other measures it tracked did not change.
Two things stay constant. The FDA has not approved cannabis products for animals, and there is no universal CBD dose for dogs. Your vet sets the starting point, and the goal you bring them shapes the plan. “She takes three tries to get off the couch” gives a vet something to measure. “I want overall wellness” does not.
Before you buy, check the milligrams of CBD per milliliter rather than the total printed on the front of the bottle, ask for the laboratory report for the batch, and read the ingredient list closely. Hemp oil and CBD oil are not interchangeable, and anything with THC, human edibles included, belongs out of reach.
