Lost dog rings her own doorbell at 3 a.m. after a night on the run

Dog Humor, Dog News

Rajah had never been taught to use the doorbell. She worked it out anyway, at 3 a.m., after a night that had her family fearing the worst.

The 18-month-old dog was resting in the yard when neighbors set off fireworks. Spooked, she scaled the fence and bolted. Her owners, Ryan Washick and Mary Lynn Whitacre, gathered friends and family and searched for hours on foot and by car. The full account from iHeartDogs describes a household that went to bed heartbroken.

Around 3 a.m. they heard scratching at the front door, then the doorbell. Camera footage showed Rajah ringing it with her nose. She had never seen anyone use it, and the family had only lived in the house about a month.

When they let her in, she cowered as if she expected to be in trouble. She came home with thorns in her coat and a smell that her family took as proof she had enjoyed herself. They told her they were not angry, only glad she was back.

What this means for your dog

Fireworks are one of the most common reasons dogs go missing, and the fix is mostly preparation. Keep a collar with an ID tag on your dog and make sure the microchip contact details are current. On nights with fireworks, bring dogs inside early, close the windows, and give them a quiet room with some background noise. Loud, unfamiliar sights are a classic fear trigger this time of year, which is why Halloween decorations can spook your dog too.

If your dog slips out, start searching right away and post to local lost-pet groups in the first hour. A quick start and a wide net help, and lost dogs do turn up in odd places, like the stray who walked into a Tampa police station.
