Dog behavior problems are less common than one study claimed

Dog News, Dog Training

If you saw the headline that almost every dog in America has a behavior problem, take a breath. It came from real data, but a reanalysis says the numbers were stretched.

The original 2024 study used owner surveys from more than 43,000 dogs in the Dog Aging Project and reported that 99.12% of dogs showed at least one moderate to serious behavior issue. Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine went back to the same data and analyzed it differently. Their results, published in the Journal of Veterinary Behavior, put moderate to serious aggression at roughly 1.2% to 30.4% depending on the type, fear and anxiety at 14.1% to 28.2%, and separation-related behavior at about 9.3%.

What this means for your dog: the alarming headline said nothing about your individual dog, and the revised numbers sit closer to what earlier surveys found. That said, the reanalysis still shows that anxiety around other dogs and fear of strangers are common, and the authors note that plenty of mild problems simply go unreported because owners learn to live around them. If something about your dog’s behavior bothers you or a neighbor, raise it with your vet or a certified behavior consultant. A mild issue caught early is easier to work with than a serious one that has had years to set in. If you would rather start at home, teaching a better behavior usually works better than punishing a bad one, and starting with a few simple cues gives you something positive to reward.
