Dog stomach gurgling: when it’s normal and when to worry

Dog Health & Medicine, Dog News

There is a particular rumble that comes out of a dog’s middle about twenty minutes before dinner. Vets call it borborygmi. It is the sound of fluid, food, and gas churning through the stomach and intestines, and most of the time it means nothing more than an empty stomach and an expectant dog.

It deserves attention when the noise is new for your dog or arrives with company. Stomach gurgling can come before a bout of diarrhea, sometimes hours before, and vomiting may follow. Whole Dog Journal lists the usual triggers: a diet change, a new treat, a trash raid, stress, or a reaction to something rich. A lactose-intolerant dog who split a bowl of ice cream will make plenty of noise.

What you can do: write down when the gurgling happens. If it clusters around dairy or one particular snack, you have your answer. If your dog inhales meals, a slow feeder, a snuffle mat, or scattered kibble cuts down on swallowed air. Hold to a steady feeding schedule and clean the water bowl daily. We looked at what probiotics can do for the gut during a round of antibiotics, and whether one fits your dog is a question for your vet.

When to call the vet: a fecal test rules out intestinal parasites, and if gurgling comes with diarrhea, vomiting, appetite loss, or weight loss, a workup is justified. The scenario that worries vets most is an obstruction. A swallowed sock or corn cob blocks the gut, letting fluid and food churn behind it, and that noise needs immediate attention. Dogs with inflammatory bowel disease also tend to have louder guts.

Most noisy stomachs turn out to be nothing. Your sense of what is normal for your dog is the real diagnostic tool, and if this noise is new or comes with any of the symptoms above, get it checked rather than waiting it out. The full guide at Whole Dog Journal covers more.
