Gel eye masks and cooling caps can poison your dog

Dog News, Dog Recalls & Safety

New ASPCA research published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association found that reusable gel products sold for headaches and pain relief are poisoning dogs. Migraine caps, eye masks and cooling wraps can contain acrylamide monomer, a known neurotoxin, at levels far above what the materials are supposed to hold. The findings were summarized by dvm360.

The case series looked at 45 dogs exposed to hydrogel products between January 2024 and June 2026. Vomiting was the most common sign (82%), followed by a racing heart rate, seizures, unsteady walking and tremors. About a third of the dogs showed behavior changes such as anxiety, agitation or aggression. Signs began within 12 hours, and among the 21 dogs whose outcomes were known, 14 died or were euthanized, most within 24 hours.

Testing on gel samples found acrylamide concentrations from 12,900 to 51,800 parts per million, as much as 86 times higher than the top of the range reported across industries. At the highest reading, under 20 grams of gel could deliver a convulsion-level dose to a 9.5-kilogram dog. Labels that call these products nontoxic or medical grade mean very little, because nontoxic is not a regulated term.

What this means for your dog

ASPCA Poison Control says it now fields reports of suspected acrylamide toxicosis weekly, and not only from migraine caps. Cooling pet pads and some dog beds use similar hydrogel fills, which puts them within reach of a dog who likes to chew. There is no antidote, so treatment is supportive, and a dog’s odds swing on how quickly it reaches a vet.

Walk through the house and move anything gel-filled into a closed drawer, including the eye mask on your nightstand. If your dog chews one open, call your vet or a poison hotline right away instead of watching for symptoms, the same rule that applies to the mushroom poisoning case we covered this week.
