Most dogs never find out what they look like. That is probably the best thing about them. Hand a dog a pair of sunglasses or a pink crown and it will not fix its hair or check a mirror. It will carry on being a dog, now accessorized, and the confidence reads as completely sincere.
The six dogs below were each given something to wear. Not one of them asked for it. Every one of them made it work.
1. The full look
Somebody handed this Shiba Inu a gold chain and a pair of sunglasses, and he kept both on without complaint. He is not posing for anyone. He just stands there like the appointment could have been an email, and the tilt of the head does the rest.
2. Heart eyes, real sun
Heart-shaped lenses, a warm afternoon, and a Pomeranian with no notes about any of it. Whatever the rest of the day holds, this is the part she would keep.
3. The studio regular
Same breed as the first dog and a completely different attitude. Yellow frames, pink backdrop, and a straight stare at whoever is holding the camera. He settled into this arrangement faster than most of us settle into a new haircut.
4. Ready for whatever comes next
A dark backdrop, a gold chain, sunglasses, and the face of a dog who understands what a portrait is for. Someone set up the light and the background, and he decided to meet the moment. He would also ride shotgun happily with the dogs who treat a car window like a movie screen.
5. Her crown, her rules
A pink crown, a brown dog, and a face somewhere between royalty and mild suspicion. She did not move and she did not object, which is how dogs agree to most things. Give her a few more minutes and she will expect the crown at dinner.
6. Hat, glasses, pavement, done
This one went all in: glasses, a hat, and a comfortable patch of pavement to show the outfit off. His eyes are closed, so the look is being appreciated on the inside. Somewhere close by a human is waiting to get those glasses back, and this dog is not finished with them yet.
Dogs wear what we hand them because they trust us, and the trust is what makes the photos work. We collected dogs caught making their absolute worst faces a while back, and that roundup was easier to put together. Faces are involuntary. Sunglasses require cooperation and a small amount of dignity.
None of these dogs asked for an accessory. All of them are wearing it better than most humans would.
