Happy golden retriever showing classic signs of a content dog

10 signs your dog is happy, according to experts

Dog News, Dog Training

Your dog can’t say “best day ever,” but they tell you anyway, dozens of times a day. You just have to know what to look for.

Veterinarian Gary Weitzman, who leads the San Diego Humane Society, says happiness shows up as a loose, relaxed body with soft eyes and ears at ease, plus a high, waggly tail. He calls the play bow the Academy Award of happiness, and he’s not wrong. Happy dogs also seek you out, lean into you, eat with a steady appetite, yip with joy during play, and sleep close to you at night.

The catch is context. A wagging tail can mean nerves, and a dog that looks like they’re smiling might just be panting from heat or stress. Read the whole dog, not one body part. Whole Dog Journal rounded up all ten signs with help from Weitzman and trainer Robin Terrell in their full guide.

What this means for your dog: happiness is mostly about routine, exercise, and sniffing. Let your dog finish reading that bush on the walk. Sniffing is brain work, and a tired brain makes a content dog. A happy dog also sleeps near you, and adult dogs can need up to 16 hours of sleep a day, so the dog sprawled across your feet is not lazy. They’re comfortable.
