Shelter dogs chose their humans at this Pick Me event

Most adoption rooms work one way. You walk the kennel row, a dozen dogs look up at once, and you have ten minutes to decide. A no-kill shelter in New Kensington, Pennsylvania tried it the other way around. At Animal Protectors of Allegheny Valley’s “Pick Me” event, adopters sat down and staff brought dogs in one at a time to sniff, wander, and choose who they wanted to stand next to.

The shelter reported four adoption applications afterward, and was careful to frame the format as a way to give dogs exposure rather than a shortcut. Anyone who clicked with a dog still went through normal adoption screening. The idea came from a viral AI-generated video of dogs choosing their humans, which the shelter decided to test in real life.

Here is what this means for your dog. When you meet a dog, ask if it can happen somewhere other than in front of its kennel. Kennel meetings are loud, they smell like every other dog in the building, and a shy dog can come across as unfriendly when it is really just overwhelmed. A quiet room, a yard, or a foster visit shows you something closer to the dog you would actually bring home. Sit on the floor, keep your voice low, and let the dog close the distance.

If you already have a dog, ask about a neutral-ground introduction before you commit. Shelters that run playgroups can tell you how two dogs actually get along, which beats a tense walk around the parking lot.

Some dogs wait a long time for their turn. Hashbrown waited 1,502 days before his. If your local shelter has never tried letting the dogs make the first move, it costs nothing to suggest it.
