Most lost dogs come home. Here is what actually brings them back

Dog News, Dog Recalls & Safety

If your dog slips out the front door, the odds are better than you think. In a national ASPCA survey of 817 dog-owning households, about 14 percent had lost a dog in the previous five years, and 93 percent of those were recovered.

How they got home matters, and dvm360 pulled the research together. Nearly half, 49 percent, were found by searching the neighborhood. A tag or microchip accounted for 15 percent. Only 6 percent came back through animal control.

The chip earns its keep at the shelter door

A 2009 study in the veterinary journal JAVMA followed 7,704 microchipped animals entering 53 US shelters. Microchipped dogs went home 52.2 percent of the time, against 21.9 percent for dogs without a chip. The usual reason a chipped dog did not make it back: contact details out of date. That detail decides cases like Owl, who made it home four years after she went missing.

Reunions are getting rarer

Shelter Animals Count recorded 638,000 dogs and cats returned to owners in 2025, down 3 percent from 2024, and only 34 percent of stray dogs were reclaimed.

Satellite trackers cover the gaps

GPS collars add live location. Most lean on cell towers, and cell coverage is what fails in the places dogs vanish: parks, farmland, trailheads. The Fi Ultra collar, named to TIME’s Best Inventions of 2026, switches to satellite when the cellular signal drops, according to the company. Luna’s month alone in Yellowstone makes the case.

What this means for your dog

Do the cheap layers this week. A tag with a number you answer. A microchip registered to current contact details, which takes ten minutes online and almost nobody does. If your dog gets out, search close to home first. A tracker is a good extra, not a replacement for the first two.
