Dog meat markets, elephants in circuses, and animal testing. These are just some of the unforgivable practices that harm animals daily.
Last Chance for Animals works with other organizations to stop animal cruelty and exploitation in different industries.
Find out what Last Chance for Animals does to stop widespread animal cruelty worldwide and what you can do to support the non-profit organization.
Who is Last Chance for Animals?
Last Chance for Animals, or LCA, is an international, non-profit organization that fights to eliminate animal exploitation worldwide.
They combat cruel acts against animals through education, investigations, media attention, and pushing for legislation.
This organization believes that animals have feelings and exist for reasons that do not depend on their service to humans.
For LCA, animals shouldn’t be made to suffer to serve humans. That is why this California-based organization preaches against the use of animals in food and clothing production, scientific experimentation, and entertainment.
Last Chance for Animals promotes a cruelty-free lifestyle and the ascription of rights to non-human beings.
How Did Last Chance for Animals Start?
LCA was founded by Chris DeRose in 1984. Chris has devoted his life to the animal rights movement, saving animals and educating people about animal abuse.
He worked as a reporter and contributed to over 100 animal stories on national shows that reached millions of people.
Chris and LCA gathered evidence that resulted in the nation’s first state prison sentences for multiple-count animal cruelty cases.
The organization led the undercover investigation and won a lawsuit against the Gettysburg National Park Service to halt the slaughter of deer in national parks.
In 2008, LCA helped conserve endangered Mountain Gorillas by providing 120 GPS units. They also led the rescue of 230 dogs and 25 cats from California’s Mojave Desert.
They have exposed, fought, and won against hundreds of puppy mills, animal abusers, slaughterhouses, circus demos, and more.
In 2022, Last Chance for Animals supported the passage of the LA Municipal Rodeo Ordinance that would ban tools of torture for rodeo animals in LA.
It also supports Virunga National Park’s Airwing, Pet Safety and Protection Act, and the Animal Liberation Wave.
What Does Last Chance for Animals Do?
LCA participates in and leads campaigns and investigations concerning animal abuse and
exploitation.
One of their current advocacies is to end the dog meat trade. Jiyen Lee, the founder of LCA’s sister organization, Animal Liberation Wave, testified at a parliamentary audit.
She highlighted the inaction of the Minister of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) to enforce the Food Sanitation Act against operators and employees of illegal dog meat slaughterhouses.
LCA also fights for animals working in entertainment. They strongly oppose animals in circuses because they believe that animals have their own needs, interests, and rights.
LCA also petitioned CNN to stop glorifying the torture of animals on its popular travel series Parts Unkown, hosted by the late Anthony Bourdain.
But LCA is mainly known for their investigations. Some people call LCA the “FBI of Animal Rights.”
One of their investigations included the Millbank Fur Farm, which pleaded guilty to animal cruelty.
They also exposed the treatment of dogs and monkeys at ITR, a U.S. Food and Drug Administration and U.S. Department of Defense-approved facility.
