The Pug is one of the oldest recognized companion dog breeds, with origins dating back to before 400BC in China. Pugs were brought back from China by Dutch merchants in the 1500s, and the breed became the emblem of the House of Orange after a pet pug saved the Prince of Orange’s life by barking to warn him of incoming Spanish troops. When William and Mary of
Orange came to England to take the throne, they brought their Pugs with them, igniting a pug craze in the United Kingdom. Queen Victoria later became a Pug fanatic, holding and breeding a large number of her own.
