Germany looks to AI to protect eagles near wind turbines

Only 130 breeding pairs of lesser spotted eagle remain in the wild in Germany’s Oder delta, where an expansion of onshore wind farming is planned. The bird keeps its eyes on prey on the ground as it soars, so the German government is working with software engineers in Colorado to train artificial intelligence to spot eagles up to almost a half-mile away and slow turbine rotation to a safe speed.
