Occasional mild days in winter are enough to enable pathogen-carrying mosquitoes, ticks and fleas to emerge, and fleas may take up residence inside, so veterinarians recommend keeping pets on heartworm preventive and flea and tick medications year-round. Heartworm preventives and antiparasitics are available as topical treatments and oral medications, and disease prevention is far safer and less expensive than treatment.
