Veterinarian Jay Hreiz says thousands of dogs in the Charlotte, N.C., area have been infected since summer with H3N2 canine influenza, an airborne virus that is easily spread among dogs at boarding facilities, dog parks and kennels. Some infected dogs develop coughs, while others are only a bit lethargic, but the virus can cause pneumonia, and some dogs have died, so dogs with signs of illness should be seen by a veterinarian, Dr. Hreiz says.
