The canine influenza outbreak that swept the US late last year appears to be leveling off, with no major pockets of infections reported, says AVMA President Dr. Lori Teller. Canine influenza isn’t known to be a threat to people, but cats can catch it, it’s highly contagious among dogs, and it can progress to pneumonia, particularly in very old, very young or immunocompromised dogs, Dr. Teller says, so owners of high-risk dogs or dogs that have contact with other dogs should talk with their veterinarian about vaccination.
