Legislation introduced in Congress earlier this week would make the animal sedative xylazine a controlled substance, and AVMA President Dr. Lori Teller says the organization “fully supports” the effort. Several states have already moved to reclassify the drug, which has been found in almost one-fourth of fentanyl powder seizures and 7% of pill seizures. The bill “strikes the right balance of protecting our communities while preserving veterinary access to this critically important animal drug,” Dr. Teller said.
