Cats need protection against disease-causing viruses and bacteria regardless of whether they stay indoors or go outside, and all cats should be vaccinated starting when they are kittens to protect their health and prevent costly bills for treatment, says AVMA President Dr. Lori Teller. All cats should have year-round protection against flea and tick infestations as well as vaccination against diseases such as rabies, panleukopenia and rhinotracheitis, and a veterinarian can recommend a preventive health plan based on age, health status and lifestyle, Dr. Teller said.
