Pet food audit standards continue to rise

Dog Food

Pet food is one of the highest regulated of all food products. Audits occur in both pet food ingredient and manufacturing environments to ensure quality and safety measures are being met, and while there is a standard for each the audit “bar” rises each time a new standard is published.

“Over the years audits have continued to intensify, with significance being placed on quality, food safety, sustainability and the environment,” said Billie Johnson, food safety and regulatory compliance manager at BHJ USA LLC. “This will continue as the global perspective grows for pet food integrity.”

Johnson will speak at Petfood Forum 2023, touching on the differences and similarities in regulatory, customer, sustainability management information systems and the Global Food Safety Initiative audits. Each audit type will be discussed as to what is typically requested.

“Work has been ongoing to ensure ‘full compatibility’ of the audit process, meaning a synchronized system for conducting audits, with updates made periodically, so that all companies (ingredient manufacturers and pet food alike) are being ‘tested’ against the same standards,” said Johnson. “Great strides have been made to ensure what is a ‘necessary’ component of food safety, quality and sustainability versus what is ‘nice to have.’”
