Keep reading to learn who Golden Gate Basset Rescue are, what they do, and what you can do to support this wonderful organization.
Who is Golden Gate Basset Rescue?
Golden Gate Basset Rescue, or GGBR, is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization that exists solely on donations to rescue abused, abandoned, and unwanted Basset Hounds.
In case you didn’t know, a Basset Hound is a dog breed known for their long, stout figure and floppy ears.
Despite being a perennial favorite of dog lovers, these Basset Hounds usually end up in shelters because they are prone to several diseases.
Many owners might also struggle with their personalities since they are generally harder to train than other dog breeds.
But that doesn’t mean Bassets deserve less love. GGBR takes orphaned Bassets into foster care, usually in volunteer homes, where they are loved and cared for until permanent, forever homes are found.
Golden Gate Basset Rescue provides the necessary medical care to these dogs so they can be prepared for adoption.
They are situated in Petaluma, California. But they help rescue and place dogs as far south as Monterey, Stanislaus, and Tuolumne counties, north as the Oregon Border, and as far east as Reno/Sparks/Carson City, NV.
How Did Golden Gate Basset Rescue Start?
Golden Gate Basset Rescue was founded in 2005 after operating under the Northern California Basset Hound Club for nearly ten years.
The non-profit organization recognizes the plight of Basset Hounds because of their common health and behavior problems.
But GGBR believed in this breed’s potential. Despite their short legs, heavy bones, and deep bark, Basset hounds are friendly, loyal, and always on the go.
Golden Gate Basset Rescue has participated in numerous projects aside from their primary foster, rescue, and rehabilitation program.
For instance, GGBR is part of the annual Barktoberfest in the Sacramento area. These small events help raise funds to rescue more dogs and build a community of dog lovers willing to help.
GGBR now covers Fresno, Madera, Mariposa, Mono, Merced, and San Benito after Basset Rescue of Central California went out of business.
They continue trying to rescue more Basset hounds in California to give Basset Hounds a second chance at life.
What Does Golden Gate Basset Rescue Do?
Golden Gate Basset Rescue aims to rescue Basset Hounds, prepare them for adoption, and find their forever homes.
The organization does not have a kennel or shelter. But they are able to rescue as many Bassets as they do because of their foster program.
GGBR takes orphaned Bassets into foster care, in volunteer homes, where they are loved and cared for until permanent, forever homes are found.
They also provide the necessary veterinary care to these dogs, such as spaying or neutering. As well as vaccinations, heartworm prevention, and tick and flea prevention.
