What’s Wrong with Grains?
Dogs aren’t meant to eat carbohydrates like grains. They thrive on whole foods like meat, organs, bone, healthy fats and some vegetables.
When kibbles were introduced in the mid 1950’s as a convenient way to feed dogs, manufacturers substituted healthy whole foods with animal by-products, spray-on fat, synthetic vitamins and grains. Grain crops such as wheat, corn, barley, rice flour, oats and quinoa were added to processed dog food products as a cheap filler to bind together pieces of kibble.
If grains were grown naturally, they would simply be an unnecessary source of carbohydrates for dogs. But the problem with grains is much more sinister. Today, the vast majority of grain crops are:
–Genetically modified. Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are altered to change the characteristics of the food and its ability to withstand toxic pesticides. GMOs often lower foods’ nutritional value and adds toxins which lead to allergies, inflammation and cell damage. Animal and human studies suggest GMOs damage intestines, kidneys, liver, and can lead to hormone imbalances, skin problems, food allergies and cancer.
-Sprayed with pesticide (Glyphosate). Glyphosate is a widely used pesticide known to cause inflammation and cancer. If disrupts the healthy balance of intestinal bacteria (microbiome) and interferes with digestion, nutrient absorption, immunity, and a dog’s ability to excrete toxins (often leading to kidney disease). Common health effects include leaky gut, allergies and frequent ear and skin infections like hot spots.
It gets worse. GMO grains and toxic glyphosate promote inflammation, which is the underlying cause of several common conditions like arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, chronic infections, diabetes, autoimmune disorders and cancer.
What About Grain-Free Dog Food Products?
Dogs that develop allergies or grain-related illnesses are often given kibble marketed as “grain-free”. In place of grains, manufacturers now add peas, lentils, legumes and plant-based lectins. Many of our clients proudly tell us that they have switched to “grain-free” processed food products, believing that this would improve their dogs’ health. However, they are surprised to learn that these “grain replacers” can block essential nutrients like taurine and lead to serious conditions like enlarged heart and congestive heart failure – especially in larger breed dogs.
Keep your dog’s diet simple and natural by feeding quality animal protein (raw or lightly cooked), bones, organs, vegetables and healthy oils. If you use grains (or legumes like chick peas), make sure they are non-GMO and organic, and limit them to an occasional treat.
Dogs are developing serious illnesses at younger ages, and are sicker than ever before. Their diet may be to blame.
