Over 1,000 companion animals died in Colorado’s devastating Marshall Fire last year, and researchers say taking stock of lessons learned from that and other disasters can help save animals in the future. Researchers extrapolated data from AVMA statistics, public records and social media posts to calculate the toll, and co-author Leslie Irvine is working with the nonprofit Animal Help Now on an app that can rapidly connect pet owners with trusted people who have authorization to enter their homes and rescue pets in an emergency.
