Canine brucellosis has been present in Montana since 2015, but veterinarian Merry Michalski of the state livestock department said the state has seen an uptick in cases, which total about 100 for the year. The disease tends to be found in unsterilized stray dogs, making it a particular concern for shelters, which are advised to test only when clinical signs emerge, according to University of Wisconsin Shelter of Medicine Program guidelines.
