The World Health Organization published a list of pathogenic fungi that pose serious risks to human health, and Cornelius Clancy, an infectious disease physician and professor of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, notes that fungal disease also threatens animals and agriculture. Veterinarians may be at especially high risk, as Tom Chiller, who leads the CDC’s Mycotic Disease Branch, points out, citing cases of Sporothrix brasiliensis being transmitted from cats with eye infections to veterinarians in Brazil.
