RECALL: Popular Food Brand Voluntarily Pulled For Salmonella Contamination

Dog Food, Dog Health

If your dog eats food produced by Freshpet Inc., it’s time to check the bag information. The popular pet food company has voluntarily recalled a single lot of their food due to Salmonella, and some recalled products were shipped out to retailers. Luckily, other Freshpet products besides this lot weren’t affected by the recall.

Even though it’s a small recall, it’s still a good idea to double-check your dog’s food just to be safe. Salmonella can affect both pets and people, so it’s best to be extra cautious in these situations.

How Can Salmonella Affect Your Family?

Salmonella is a contagious infection that can spread between humans and animals. Even if your dog isn’t showing symptoms, they can still pass it on to you.

Humans infected with Salmonella may experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, cramps, and fever. It could also lead to more serious health concerns, such as arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, eye problems, muscle pain, and bladder infections.

Dogs with Salmonella could face lethargy, diarrhea, fever, vomiting, abdominal pain, and a decreased appetite. Salmonella infections usually clear up on their own in a few days, but they’re very uncomfortable for humans and dogs.

What Should You Do with the Recalled Products?

If you have a package of dog food from this lot, dispose of it right away. Wash any surfaces that the food could’ve touched, such as bowls, containers, and counters. Then, thoroughly wash your hands afterward.

If your dog ate any of the food, monitor them for symptoms. When in doubt, take them to the vet if they’re behaving strangely. So far, no health problems related to the recall have been reported.

Pet parents who have questions or concerns relating to the recall should contact Freshpet at 1-800-285-0563. The call center operates from 9 am to 9 pm on Monday through Friday and 9 am to 1 pm on Saturday and Sunday.
